Facial relaxant injections have been used safely for many years in the treatment of facial spasms and muscular problems. More recently they have been used successfully in temporarily removing wrinkles associated with the ageing process. The injections work by freezing or relaxing the muscle as appropriate. Ideal areas for treatment are the eyebrows, eyes, mouth, neck and forehead because these areas contain muscles with little significant function.

Most people who receive facial relaxant injections experience temporary mild discomfort such as swelling, but this usually subsides within 24-48 hours.

Results are usually very good with patients seeing the effect of injections anything from 1 to 21 days after treatment.

Occasionally, a repeat treatment may be necessary where there has been a particularly weak response. Patients can expect the effects to last between 3 and 6 months, and treatments are therefore usually repeated at 3 to 4 month intervals.

Restylane® and Perlane are gels that are injected into wrinkles to smooth the surface of the skin and fill the crease that the wrinkle has made, or to enhance the fullness of the lips. Made from non-animal hyluronic acid, they have been proven to be safe and effective by numerous cosmetic clinics. Sculptra is injected into the skin to promote collagen production and reduce facial lines.

As with any cosmetic procedure, patients may experience some minor side effects after treatment. Initial localised swelling at the injection site is normal, and lip treatments sometimes result in a short term uneven appearance or more pronounced swelling, but these usually disappear within a week and lips become smooth and even again. Bruising, cold sores or acne may occur around the site of the injections but these are almost always temporary and usually clear within a couple of weeks of treatment.

In most cases the gel provides good results almost immediately and patients can expect the effects to last about 12 months. The natural substances within Restylane® gradually lose their effectiveness and we therefore recommend repeat treatments at yearly intervals.
